Serial numbers tend to be stamped or written somewhere on the headstock or neck joint of the guitar. This number can be used to date a guitar and in some cases tell where it was made. Most guitar manufacturers put a serial number on each instrument they produce. Right: The 'inked on' serial number on this 1959 Les Paul Junior has no space between the '9' digit (year) and the rest of the numbers. This style serial number was used on all 1953 to 1960 solidbody Gibson guitars. So, when you get that answer now, you have to know which way they looked at the numbers.Left: The 'inked on' serial number on a 1955 Les Paul standard solidbody guitar.

With everything being computerized now, it is easier to manipulate the data to sort other ways. Serial number is the traditional method for Martin and seems to be how Longworth did it when he started publishing his books on Martin history. It can be sorted according to ship date or serial number. When you ask Martin the question, "How many D-28's were made in 2004?", the answer can vary depending on who looks it up and how they sort the data. This question does confuse things elsewhere though.

It could be argued that method is arbitrary, but at least it's consistent for the sake of discussion. Since that time collectors have accepted the serial number date as the date of the guitar. That was further solidified when Martin started publishing their serial numbers for public use. Martin has traditionally used the serial number method. That's always been the case, but you have to draw the line somewhere with regard to whether you call the guitar a 1981 or 1982. the other. It's true that many late serial number guitars are not completed and shipped until early the following year. I would argue that if you have a serial number very close to the "last serial number of the year," then it's really a leap of faith believing that the guitar was actually completed in one year vs. Martin assigns the numbers before it starts building them, and then engraves them on the head block (at least for standard series.) For that reason - and because guitars can take a different amount of time to go through the build process - the serial number is only an approximation of when the guitar was built.
